WELCOME
We are a registered charitable organisation which provides a safe supportive temporary community living environment for abused women and children. We help families living at the Refuge begin to recover from the trauma of victimisation and begin the work of rebuilding their lives free from violence. We enable abused women and children to increase their independence, their capacity to be self sufficient, and their ability to make and act on informed choices about what is in their best interests as well as their children’s.
Supportline Women’s Refuge has been providing safe housing and ongoing support for women and children who have experienced domestic violence since 1982. The refuge takes pride in the commitment and training of its staff as well as in the excellent relationship we have with local community organisations.
We oppose the use of violence as a means of control over others, and support equality in relationships, and the concept of helping women assume power over their own lives.
Statistics show domestic violence claims the life of one woman every 15 days, and 8 to 10 children die every year from domestic violence in New Zealand.
We are committed to tackling domestic violence on every front, and this is encapsulated in our Code of Ethics and Code of Practice and is summarised in our Mission Statement as:
“Supportline Women’s Refuge undertakes to provide support and safe shelter to women and children who have been abused, thus enhancing the families ability to keep themselves safe and to live free from fear.”
